Dental implants are making your life better!
1. What is dental implantation about?
It’s a prosthetic tooth root, which we use to replace lost tooth. It is build in through a small operation into the maxilla. Dental implants have been regularly used in the past 40 years. An implant is basicly an artificial root, that is operated into the edentulous part of the jaw. This is especially preferable if the teeth next to the implant are healthy and their scraping would not be reasonable. Implants do not only serve as abutment for dental prosthesis, but they can also give appropriate support to removable prosthesis, thus their use may be considered in any patient who is lacking teeth.
2. What are the benefits of dental implantation?
The benefits of implants are obvious. Well anchored stabil dentures help positive selfrespect. Lots of satisfied patients tell us about the excellent functional and aesthetic value of implants, especially in cases of fully toothless jaws. Namely because in this case unless we keep there can not be reached such an extent of bite strenght and stability, not even with a perfectly made dental prosthesis.
3. What should we know about the procedure of implantation?
After analyzing the anatomy of the mouth with the help of panoramic X-ray that shows both the upper and the lower jaw, the doctor prepares the best treatment plan for your needs. The treatment itself starts after this. After anesthesy the bone to be treated is uncovered. The bone here is developped to take in the implant. Then the screw implant is placed into the jaw and the gum is restored to cover the implant. The whole process takes about 30 to 90 minutes of which the operation itself is only 15 minutes per implant. Possible inconveniences following the treatment do not exceed pain following extraction of teeth. In the healing process the tissue grows unto the implant increasing its stability. All this happens in a protected environment under the tissue of the gum. Healing is complete after about 3-4 months the implant can be uncovered and the construction (crown, bridge, prothesis) can be prepared. This process is the same as in cases of traditional prosthesis where there is no implant.
4. Is the implantation painful?
Except from very rare exceptions implantation is an ambulatory treatment that can be performed with the help of usual anesthesy. It is much less painful than most patients think. In fact implantation is practicly painless thanks to steril circumstances and modern instruments.
5. How long do I need for recovery after an implantation?
In general 3-6 months are enough.
6. Some more important information on dental implantation:
* Implantation is not always possible. Wether this is the best kind of treatment in your case is found out by our specialists during the anticipatory checkup.
* There is a need of re-examination every six months following the implantation.
* The patient who has an implant needs to make an effort to maximize the cleanliness of the oral cavity, which includes cleaning the teeth as well as the so called neck of the implant.
* In case the patient wears a denture on the area where the implant is, the prosthesis cannot be worn in the first ten days following the operation (until stitches are taken out)
* Regular intake of alcohol, drugs or smoking are all considered as risk factors.
* Certain illnesses (diabetes, cardio vascular diseases, etc. ) may cause that implantation is not recommended to the patient. To decide wether implantation is or isn't recommended is the dentist's responsibility.
